I discovered surface pattern design in my mid-50’s after I got laid off from my fancy corporate job. I was in shock, depressed and desperately searching for something that would light me up again and bring joy and meaning back into my life.
It took me a while to get the hang of it and I have one very special person to thank for helping me along the way. Her name is Bonnie Christine. I’ve mentioned her before and wrote a blog post about the incredible experience I had last year finally meeting her in person. I’m going to do another blog post about her soon but more about that later.
Teaching surface pattern design is the cornerstone of my business today and I absolutely LOVE it. I only offer this free Masterclass a few times a year so I’m giving you the scoop here since registration closes in a few days.
EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS YOU’LL NEED:
Here’s what you’ll need for the Masterclass:
· A computer
· Adobe Illustrator (explore a free trial at adobe.com)
· Paper
· A pen, and
· A smartphone
To be perfectly honest, I do get a little fancier with the paper and the pens! I use mixed media paper from Canson that comes in an 9 by 12-inch sketchbook. My favorite pens for sketching are Uni-Pins by Mitsubishi. I always buy their set of 9 black fine liners because you get 9 different line widths from 0.05 to 0.8.
HOW THE MASTERCLASS WORKS:
There are a couple of things that I love about the format of this Masterclass. I teach the lessons LIVE on my Facebook page, Anne LaFollette Art, which means you can ask me questions while I’m teaching the content. Engagement is always really high. It feels like the classroom of the future with everyone jumping onto Facebook from all over the world and getting access to content they want to learn.
The LIVE lessons are available as replays if you can’t make it live but it’s a lot more fun for me when a whole bunch of people attend live and engage with me. After all, I’m talking into the green dot at the top of my MacBook Pro. It’s nice to know there are real people somewhere on the other side of that dot. It fuels me when I see your participation and questions pop up in the comments area.
I’m going to try something new this time around with “watch parties” inside my private Facebook group, Anne’s Art Club. I recently learned about watch parties and am excited to give them a try. The idea behind them is that I’ll host a “watch party” for the replay of my LIVE broadcast. You can watch the replay with me and other students. It’s like going to the movies together but in a virtual way if you know what I mean. You’ll be able to add comments and ask questions and I’ll answer them right then and there. What a great benefit if you can’t attend LIVE because you’re in totally different time zones like Australia, New Zealand or Europe.
In addition to teaching the content LIVE, I’ll be providing additional recorded tutorials, a workbook and some cheat sheets through my online course platform which is hosted by Kajabi.
