Surface Design? What The Heck Is That...

Truth be told, I’d never heard of it either. But we all actually know what it is. It’s any illustration, piece of artwork or repeating pattern that’s on a surface. And that surface can be pretty much anything: carpeting, upholstery, stationary, duvet covers, sheets, pillow shams, tea towels, wrapping paper, wall paper. The list goes on and on and on. This industry has been around forever and I’m sure you’ll recognize several of the people who’s work I highlight in this week’s broadcast.

BTW - today, February 25 is the last day to enroll in Bonnie Christine’s Immersion course. Here’s my link in case you want to jump in before it’s too late.

Strawberry Thief by William Morris

Strawberry Thief by William Morris

Surface Design has been around for a very long time. William Morris, who’s Strawberry Thief wall paper is shown above, started designing wallpaper in 1862 and was instrumental in pushing for new advances in technology including the use of zinc plates.

His work is recognizable because of several characteristics including floral and bird themes, frequent use of trellises or other vine-like elements that create geometry in his work, and rich colors. His work is dense with motifs close together and full of intricate details.

Let’s move forward 100 years and talk about Marimekko, the brand started by a Finnish couple in the 1950s.

Their signature style is recognizable through the use of bold graphics, bright colors, and a modern 60s feel. The brand is huge and these lovely designs are sold on everything from duvet and sheets sets to wrapping paper and apparel products.

Finally, I love to highlight my friend and colleague Bonnie Christine who began her career as a surface designer 10 years ago.

Bonnie’s work is light, airy, whimsical and comes from the heart. Her collections are always built around a person story or memories from her childhood and family which makes them deep with meaning.

She is an internationally licensed designer and online educator who is passionate about sharing her love of surface design through an online course called: Surface Design Immersion with Bonnie Christine.

I mention it because enrollment for the class of 2020 closes at 9pm California time today, February 25th.

Bonnie only offers this program once a year. Click my affiliate link to learn all the details about the course. I offer a Bonus Experience if you purchase through me. Read last week blog for details on that.

Don’t wait until 2021. A year is a very long time to wait to make progress towards your dreams.

I hope to see you in Immersion!

Next week, I’m releasing a new quiz called: What’s Your Doodle Profit Potential. I can’t wait for you to take it to find out. :)
