Create a Holiday Wreath in Adobe Illustrator

Welcome to this week’s blog. I’m doing something a little bit differently this week. I thought it would be fun for me to demonstrate how to make a beautiful holiday wreath using some of your hand-drawn little doodles and the magic of Adobe illustrator.

Let’s jump right in.

There's lots and lots to learn about how to use Adobe illustrator for illustration, for surface pattern design and for a variety of other things. And that is what I teach and coach inside my various programs.

In this demo, I’ll show you my work flow and what I made using the same motifs in this one design.

What you see below is how I get started. My workflow always starts with creating a color palette and then drawing a variety of different motifs or elements as I like to call them. This grouping showcases different scales from larger elements to very small dots that will work great as filler elements.

Everything is hand drawn and then brought into Adobe Illustrator, image traced to turn these assets into vector artwork, and then I drop in the colors.

The next part of the process for me is to create a circle on my art board which creates a guide for my wreath. I’ll delete it eventually, but at the start it’s great to have a guide to help me place my elements. I used the ellipse tool which is in the left-hand side bar and created a perfect circle on my art board by holding down the shift key.

Next comes the fun part where I place my elements around the circle. I've added some of the larger motifs first and elements in a slightly darker green. Then I added the filler elements that are really pretty. The image below shows the completed wreath with the red and blue doodles and the very tiny dots that fill everything in nicely.

I added Happy New Year in the center for the finishing touch. I turned this design into pretty greeting cards. And you can see that I used some of the individual motifs in different ways to create the Christmas tree and another set of different greeting cards. This is a great example of how you can leverage your work to create a variety of different illustrations.
