Three Tips to Kickstart Your Creative Practice

Hello, my friend, and welcome to this week's broadcast. Let’s talk about three tips to kickstart your creative practice when you’re feeling stuck. All three of them have really helped me and I hope they’ll be valuable for you as well. Some of them are practical and some of them are a little bit more, I would say, holistic. Let’s jump in.

Tip Number One: Keep a list of ideas

This is perhaps the most practical tip because I'm a very practical person. Keep lists! What do I mean by that? As creatives, we need to fill the well of inspiration and ideas all the time. Maybe you already do this, but when you’re out on a walk and you see something beautiful or a creative idea pops into your mind, write it down. I always have a little notebook in my pocket or my phone so that I can capture ideas whenever they come to me. I also find that there are different times of the day when some piece of inspiration might pop into my head. It's important for me to write it down before I forget it!

Tip Number Two: Practice, practice, practice

If you're in my creative community, you are most likely a multi-passionate creative who’s interested in learning surface design and how to use Adobe Illustrator to make beautiful illustrations and repeating patterns that you can license and put on a variety of products.

On this journey, you need to practice a ton because practice helps us gain more confidence in our Illustrator skills and helps your unique signature style emerge more quickly. Practice helps you hone your design skills so that Illustrator becomes just another tool in your tool kit, like another brush or pencil.

Tip Number Three: Don’t rush… Enjoy the journey

I’m very passionate about this tip. Please, don't rush! It’s important to enjoy each stage in your creative journey. It’s not a race and making progress each day or week is the key.  While you’re enjoying the journey, little clues will start to emerge. Color palettes that you love. Mark making that’s unique to you. Each step in the process and each part of your journey is important for your overall development.

Grab a free 7-day trial to Adobe Illustrator . Select Illustrator 2021 CC for the version I recommend. It comes with the iPad version so you get both!

Bye for now. And I'll see you next week.
