4 Ways to Earn Money in Surface Design - #4 Workshops
Hello again, my friend. I am super excited to continue this blog series about the four major ways to make money in Surface Pattern Design.
Three weeks ago, we talked about licensing. Two weeks ago, it was all about direct selling. Last week, I talked about indirect selling, also known as passive income.
This week is all about in-person and virtual workshops, as well as digital courses - more great ways for you to share your passion for the artwork you create. If you missed any of my prior blogs, please go back and read them to catch up.
Workshops: In-Person or Online
If you have ever done in-person workshops, you may have had to pivot during this past year by presenting those workshops virtually over the internet with Zoom. If you have not done that yet, now would be a great time to learn how to offer workshops virtually.
Even if you are passionate about in-person workshops and plan to return to them when it’s safe to do so, why not also consider increasing your impact by offering workshops virtually (online) to reach more people in the world?
Advances in technology continue to make it very easy for us to reach more people than ever before. You only need a couple of pieces of equipment to teach online and almost everyone has become very comfortable learning this way. All you need is a stand for your smartphone and a Zoom account so that your audience can watch what you teach. There truly are few barriers for you to pivot or expand your existing creative business with online workshops.
Digital Courses:
If you record your Zoom teaching sessions, you have a built-in asset that you can turn into a digital or online course. That’s a business asset that you can sell over and over again.
When creatives initially come into my community, they want to either sell products directly, or become licensed which takes time to get the ball rolling, or they get started with indirect selling (passive income). Frequently these same creatives discover that they have a passion they’d love to pass on to others and start exploring workshops and digital courses.
As I often say, “We can do hard things!” We can learn how to do new things, and diversifying means we aren’t putting all our eggs in one basket. You can also turn your workshops into additional assets.
Additional Assets:
· eBooks
Did you know that another great source of income can be found in the information you are sharing in workshops or courses by creating downloadable eBooks? You can market eBooks right on your website and offer them for free to help grow your email list, or you can charge for them.
· Instructional Guides
You can also create instructional guides in a pdf format to provide your community a written version of what you are teaching so they can follow along at home.
There are so many ways for you to share your surface design artwork, whether it’s acrylic painting, hand lettering, watercolor work, or sketching. There is so much to consider and explore!
I hope you have enjoyed this four-part series, and I look forward to meeting up with you again next week!

MEET ANNE
Hi…I’m Anne!
My creative inspiration comes from a lifetime of observation. I grew up in Paris on the Place St. Sulpice and walked to school through the Luxembourg gardens. And that was only the beginning… Learn more by watching the video on my About page.
