The Importance of Morning Routines

Welcome to this week's blog. Let’s jump right into today's topic, which is all about morning routines.

The reason that morning routines are important is that they help you get your day started on the right foot. I find that when I skip my morning routine, I don't accomplish as much as I do when I stick with it.

Here are my morning routine tips:

#1 – Savor a morning beverage you enjoy.

What do you enjoy in the morning? Do you enjoy having a cup of coffee, a cup of tea, or just a large glass of water? Maybe some hot water with lemon added to it?

I start my morning with coffee, but think about when you wake up in the morning. What is the first thing that's going to help you kickstart your day? What do you want to savor?

This really is less about moving through the day quickly or jumping into the business component of your day right away. It's more about starting slowly, savoring the morning time, and enjoying easing into your day, so pick something you’ll enjoy savoring.

#2 – Find an enjoyable spot.

Where do you want to enjoy this morning routine? Do you want to take a walk and have that be part of how you clear your mind and get a little bit of exercise first thing in the morning? Or like me, do you want to sit in your breakfast nook? If it's a beautiful morning and it's warm enough, or even if it's not warm enough, do you want to bundle up and sit outside somewhere?

Your morning routine doesn’t need to take long. Mine is only about 20 minutes.

#3 – Pick your focus or activity.

As you're savoring either your morning cup of coffee or tea, and you're sitting in your breakfast nook or outside taking a walk, what do you want to be thinking about?

Do you enjoy journaling? Do you enjoy sketching? Maybe you want to take a couple of photographs on your walk? Or do you want to reflect on what you have ahead of you that day?

I use Michael Hyatt's Full Focus Planner, and I set out my “big three” the night before. If you're not familiar with Michael Hyatt's Full Focus Planner, it's a wonderful planner that's incredibly well-organized.

He recommends picking three goals that you want to accomplish each day. Why? Because we all make to-do lists that are much too long. Then when we don't accomplish them, we feel terrible and go to bed thinking that we didn't accomplish anything.

Whereas, if you set three goals for yourself and you accomplish all three of them, you are going to feel fantastic, and you’ll make progress towards your longer-term goals! Visualizing your day like this will get you off on the right foot.

With that, I'll leave you. I can't wait to hear about your morning routine. Bye for now and I’ll see you next week.
