Surface Design? Never Heard of it...

Well, hello there and Happy New Year! Welcome to 2022! I am so excited to kick off a new series this month. We're going to dive into Surface Pattern Design and all of the different ways that you can make money from your artwork.

If you've been in my universe for a while, you know what Surface Design is, but many of you may be new here. Welcome!

Surface Design is essentially any pattern, design or illustration that goes on any surface. A better way to think about it is to look around yourself right now to see how many things have either a design or a repeating pattern on them. A repeating pattern is also called a seamless pattern where the design goes on endlessly from left to right, and top to bottom.

You may find designs and patterns on your carpet, wrapping paper, fabric on your couch, the duvet cover on your bed, a phone case, clothes, etc. The list goes on and one.

What’s essential is that you realize this industry is huge, and that means the opportunity for us as artists is also huge.

The goal of these next few weeks is to dig into the big categories you can explore to make money with your designs as a Surface Pattern Designer.

We're going to talk about licensing, then dive into selling directly by going to art fairs or craft fairs for example. You can also sell indirectly and make money in your sleep by uploading your designs to what's called Print-On-Demand (POD) shops.

We’ll discuss how either live workshops or in-person workshops can work for you to get your artwork out into the world, or how you might have an approach to your design work that you want to teach.

Throughout the series, I'm going to give you my top tips for making money in these different categories and we're also going to talk about deciding which one might be best for you.

To wrap up the series, I’m going to discuss a bonus category, which is memberships.

For now, download my free e-book! It’s called How to Craft a Career in Surface Design and in it, I dive even deeper into the different monetization strategies that I’ll cover in this blog over the next several weeks.

You’ll discover inspiring, real-life examples of students who've come through my programs and are now making money in these various categories inside the industry.

I hope you're excited to follow me for the next five weeks as we dive into each one of these topics.

Bye for now!

MEET ANNE

Hi…I’m Anne!
My creative inspiration comes from a lifetime of observation. I grew up in Paris on the Place St. Sulpice and walked to school through the Luxembourg gardens. And that was only the beginning… Learn more by watching the video on my About page.
