Let's Talk Subscriptions!

Ready to explore developing your own subscription box or subscription series? Let’s jump into yet another way to get your artwork out into the world and spread more joy.

For the past month, we’ve been exploring different opportunities for you to monetize your designs. I’m a big fan of trying several to see which ones work best for you. You may be surprised!

Let’s dive into subscriptions and several ways for you to think about them:

#1 – Greeting cards.

Although our world today is geared towards doing many things online or on our phones, it’s lovely and quite special to get something beautiful in the mail. When was the last time you received something truly special in the mail? It made a lasting impression, right?

Natasha Zahn Pristas, who you’ll find in my free e-book,: Craft a Career You Love in Surface Design, has recently launched a subscription that’s all about greeting cards. As a subscriber, you receive a box of handmade cards along with a list of ideas for when and who to send them to. What a great idea!

You can also apply this idea to other paper products that are easy and inexpensive to ship including calendars, art prints with quotes or illustrations, themed notebooks and more. The possibilities are endless.

#2 – A subscription box.

It’s likely that at some point you’ve received a curated box of fruit or chocolates or other perishables during the holiday season. Think about creating your own box with non-perishable items in it. A box containing some notebooks with your designs on them. Or a series of illustrations. Or a mix of items. Doesn’t that sound lovely?

One of my students, Mary-Ann Walker LeClair, has a box called “My Favorite Things” which she sends to her subscribers monthly and the box is full of items curated with her artwork. She’s recently expanded this idea to include special occasion boxes for key times of the year including Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and other key holidays.

#3 – A series of art classes.

If you love to share your art practice - how you draw, or doodle, or paint - you might explore creating a subscription where people join you online once a month to watch you demonstrate your process. Create a monthly subscription series that student pay for. You’ll deliver amazing value during each demonstration. You can interact with students and answer their questions in the moment. What a great way to share your talents and help your students make progress while having fun and connecting with each other.

There are many creative ways to explore subscriptions and I encourage you to do so, especially because they are great source of recurring income.
