Meet artist and quilter Ilynn Adler
Bonjour, ma chere amie! (“Hello, my friend!” in French.) In this week’s blog, I’m sharing a spotlight with the sweet Ilynn Adler. She’s a quilter who took my Pattern Design Academy® program, and now creates fabrics to use in her own quilts. You’re in for a real treat.
If you’re sometimes scared to take a chance on yourself, Ilynn’s spotlight is just the inspiration you need. Even though her parents didn’t support her art at all, she was committed to bringing creativity into everything she did. As a school counselor, she would bring her quilts into the room and stitch while she was talking to the kids. She has always been committed to self-learning and taking classes on things that are really important to her.
The video of my interview with Ilynn is over on my YouTube channel HERE. Please subscribe to my channel when you pop over there to watch it.
Here are a few ways Ilynn inspires you to take a chance on yourself:
#1 – What’s your mission?
Ilynn confidently tells us that she believes her mission in life is to create, and her mission in Surface Design is to make fabrics that she uses in her quilts. I love this because her mission encourages her to keep learning and to get through challenges like learning Adobe Illustrator.
Knowing your mission keeps you motivated to stay the course, especially when things get challenging. It also tells your community what you’re aiming for and how to support you. A mission gives meaning to the steps you’re taking.
Tell me: what’s your mission as an artist? You can share your answers in the comments on my YouTube channel HERE.
#2 – Follow your gut.
When Ilynn joined Doodles®, she would be up past midnight working on her designs because she was “so intrigued and motivated,” and she knew in her gut that these were skills that she needed to learn.
This is so important because as artists and entrepreneurs, we’re constantly making decisions about how to bring our ideas to life, or even how to market our designs, and we sometimes can’t tell if a plan will turn out well. This means that it’s often necessary to just trust yourself, and to follow your gut.
Have you been afraid to make a decision about something that could help you or your business? If so, I encourage you to take a leap and go with what your gut is telling you. Taking action will always bring the clarity you need.
#3 – Practice makes easy.
Ilynn is a great example of what it’s like to believe you can do hard things. She says, “the technology was stressful at first, and once you learn and memorize the steps, it becomes second nature. Don’t let the technology get you down.”
The technology in Surface Design can be very challenging. This is mainly Adobe Illustrator, so I like to hand-hold my students through learning how to use it. Like Ilynn noted, with enough practice, hard things like this will become second nature. You just need to take a chance and give yourself time.
Is there something you’re struggling to learn right now? Remember to give yourself grace because the more you practice, the easier it will become.
If you would like to see more of what Ilynn is up to, she’s one of the creatives with SAGE Designers, which you can find on Instagram, @sagedesigners. She was highlighted on their page HERE.
You will also find Ilynn featured on my Academy® celebrate page HERE along with other students showcasing their art after learning Surface Design.

MEET ANNE
Hi…I’m Anne!
My creative inspiration comes from a lifetime of observation. I grew up in Paris on the Place St. Sulpice and walked to school through the Luxembourg gardens. And that was only the beginning… Learn more by watching the video on my About page.
