Encouragement For When You Feel Stuck

Let’s talk about encouragement, specifically as it relates to your creativity. Have you ever felt a little bit stuck or like your creativity has dried up, all of a sudden? It happens to all of us, from time to time. And I have three tips for you to help you move through this.

The most important thing before I even give you the tips, is to recognize the fact that creativity ebbs and flows. And that's a very, very natural state of being. However, it is helpful to have some tricks up your sleeve when this happens to help you move through it.

Tip number one.

Take a break. That sense of creative overwhelm is actually your body and your creativity telling you that you need to slow down. And take an actual break to recharge your batteries. Trying shifting your focus to something else.

I talked a couple of weeks ago about shifting your focus. If you normally do watercolor work, but you're feeling a little bit stuck, then take a break from watercolor. Switch to sketching or try gouache or acrylic paint. Or take a break from creating all together.

That might mean putting all of your art supplies down for a week and read instead.

Tip number two.

Pace yourself. You know that I offer both a free program called From Doodles To Dollars™ and a paid program called The Pattern Design Academy™. In both programs there's a lot of incredibly valuable content.  You're getting exposed to new ideas and you're learning new skills. It's very important that you pace yourself and don't rush the learning process.

In my 8-week course, it’s not expected that you implement everything right away. You have lifetime access, which means you can watch the videos as often as you want and come back to them again and again. Pacing yourself is the best way to absorb and retain all of this fantastic new learning.

Tip number three.

Observe the beauty around you. Take your camera or your mobile phone and go outside. Take a walk and start taking pictures out in nature. Use this opportunity to gather inspiration for future creative projects. You might find that perfect sidewalk crack or patch of gravel that you can turn into a beautiful background texture.

Organize your photos into an inspirational folder so that you can draw from this new well of ideas in the future when you hit another dry batch.

Those are my three tips to give you encouragement when you're feeling creatively stuck. I hope that these three tips help you move through it with grace, with encouragement and knowing that your creativity will indeed return.
