Meet Quilter Janell Vincent

Well hello there, my friend! This week I’m sharing another amazing spotlight and you’ll be inspired by Janell Vincent who ‘s another multi-passionate creative. She’s a quilter, a teacher, and joined my #annesuniverse through my Doodles and Pattern Design Academy programs.

Janell was surrounded by artistic women in her family like her mother, grandmother, and aunt, so she started her creative journey at a very early age. She has practiced different kinds of art including painting, woodwork, quilting, and needle arts. She has even managed and participated in craft shows. Now, Janell loves most to paint and quilt, and she even teaches an online course on quilting.

Here are a few key takeaways from this interview:

#1 – Be resourceful

Janell loves to teach quilting and crafting. Working as an office admin for a Church, she found a way to use Church spaces to teach quilting to children, and some ladies within the Churches would let her use their sewing machines.

She also got sewing machines from local shops that were willing to let her use their machines, especially because the final products from her classes would go to the children and charities. Isn’t that great?

Janell got resourceful by involving her community, teaching children & adults, and donating to a cause. You may not have the inventory needed to set up your own store or workshop, but I encourage you to not give up. Instead, think about how you can be resourceful with the people, supplies, and spaces that you have access to.

If you would like to learn more about teaching in workshops, you can read my blog about workshops here.

#2 – Join a creative community

Janell talks about her amazing creative community that meets every week to learn together, encourage each other, and share new insights. She says that they’ve really been helping her learn to move forward.

Having a community that “gets you” is more and more important. You might join a mastermind, an accountability pod, a learning pod, or even just your handful of personal contacts that you can turn to at any time. What matters is that you’re not alone on your creative journey because no artist is an island, and we all do better together.

#3 – Identify your target audience

Janell says, “I like to make a lot of children’s quilts and projects because parents & grandparents love to buy for their kids.” I think this is so important to lean into because there’s a difference between a target audience and an end user, but it’s easy to think both are always the same person.

Your target audience should be the people who will actually purchase your products, and those may be the parents, grandparents, spouses, siblings, and even employers of your intended end user. For Janell, you can see that her target end user is a child, but her target audience is parents & grandparents.

I encourage you to make this distinction for your creative business, especially if you struggle with marketing your products. You may need to adjust your marketing to speak more to those who will buy your products for the people who will use them.

MEET ANNE

Hi…I’m Anne!
My creative inspiration comes from a lifetime of observation. I grew up in Paris on the Place St. Sulpice and walked to school through the Luxembourg gardens. And that was only the beginning… Learn more by watching the video on my About page.
