Meet Quilter Nancy Myers
Welcome to this week’s blog. I have another amazing spotlight for you today, and it’s with the lovely Nancy Myers.
Nancy has been creative since she was a kid, and found #annesuniverse in 2019. She’s had a teaching career, served as the President of a quilt guild, and enjoyed traveling around the U.S. for quilt exhibits & shows. Her whole journey has been about finding opportunities to pursue her creative path, and she offers a lot of inspiration in this spotlight.
The video of my interview with Nancy is over on my YouTube channel HERE. Please subscribe to my channel when you pop over there to watch it.
Here are a few ways that Nancy encourages you to forge your own path:
#1 – Try out different companies.
Surface Design, just like the name implies, is all about getting your designs onto different surfaces. These “surfaces” are anything that your art can be printed on, so it’s super important to do your research when choosing printing companies.
Nancy shares with us what she observed when she ordered fabric from different companies. She found that one company had thicker ink while the ink from the other company seemed to sit on top of the fabric. Also, one company had thicker fabric, but the other company had nicer fabric.
These are some of the findings you may encounter as well, and you get to choose which company produces the best results for your art. You’ll get lots of recommendations if you’re in #annesuniverse, and I encourage you to experiment so that you find the companies that are best for your unique path.
#2 – It’s not all about flowers.
As Nancy shows us some of her fabrics, she mentions that she’s more of a geometric person and you can see a lot of geometry with simple shapes, dots, and lines in her designs.
I love this because a lot of people come into my community thinking all we do is flowers, and it’s very important that you know that you don’t have to do flowers. You can forge your own special path with shapes and geometrics, and still create fabulous pieces of art.
The good news is if you’re intimidated by drawing, it’s easy to start with simple shapes because you don’t even have to draw them. Adobe Illustrator lets you create shapes at the click of a button on your computer and you can fill these shapes with colors very easily, then simply create your pattern from there.
In my Doodles® mini course, I show you how to navigate Adobe Illustrator even if you’ve never done it before. You learn how to create your first pattern quickly with step by step videos and written guides to support you. #3 – What matters to you?
A lot of people in my community want to leave a legacy with their art, and create artwork that supports something that matters to them.
Nancy shares her concern about the wild Lupine plant and an endangered butterfly called the blue Karner which she would like to help save. This matters so much to her that even though she’s more of a geometric person, she’s been drawing the wild Lupine and blue Karner to support the movement to save them. Isn’t that great?
When creating your own unique path to success in Surface Design, I encourage you to think about what matters most to you. Whether it’s saving an endangered species or any other cause, think about how you can use your art to showcase and support what you care about.

MEET ANNE
Hi…I’m Anne!
My creative inspiration comes from a lifetime of observation. I grew up in Paris on the Place St. Sulpice and walked to school through the Luxembourg gardens. And that was only the beginning… Learn more by watching the video on my About page.
