Meet Artist & Author Carmellia Chavers
Calling all multi-passionate creatives! This week’s insightful spotlight is for you. I had the pleasure of interviewing another graduate of my Academy®, Carmellia Chavers, who is a published author, radio show host, Surface Pattern Designer, and creative entrepreneur.
Having multiple passions can feel like you’re all over the place, but I like to spin that in the most positive way and say you’re a multi-passionate creative. Carmellia is an amazing example of a multi-passionate creative, so in this spotlight, we talked about what it’s like to always have ideas running through your mind, how to stay organized, and how to make the most of your passions.
The video of my interview with Carmellia is over on my YouTube channel HERE. Please subscribe to my channel when you pop over there to watch it.
Here are a few key takeaways from this interview:
#1 – Get organized
As a multi-passionate creative, it’s very easy to lose track of the different projects you may be doing. Carmellia shares with us her own method of staying organized by color coding her calendar, and I like how she infuses art into organization by using colors.
I love to use my calendar and Full Focus Planner to stay organized and keep track of my priorities. Whether you use a calendar, planner, time-blocking, or color-coding, it’s super important to have some kind of system to keep you organized.
#2 – Take regular breaks
One of the perks of learning about Surface Design is that your mind is full of so many ideas, but the downside is you can so easily get caught up in executing those ideas that you forget to take care of yourself. As Carmellia mentions, she has to remind herself to step away from the computer and take a walk or get some sleep.
I always like to remind my students about good habits to practice when it comes to taking care of yourself as a creative, especially if you’re multi-passionate and it’s hard for you to turn off your idea machine. How are you taking care of yourself today?
#3 – Pay attention to the seasons
Carmellia tells us how she plans to achieve results in the coming seasons, like in the Summer when boutiques open. I usually encourage my students to try using the seasons & holidays for inspiration, and like Carmellia, you can use the seasons to guide your business plans too.
Some opportunities are easier to find in certain seasons and this could be based on the weather, holidays, and even where you live. You may not be creating seasonal designs, but if you’re a multi-passionate creative, you want to keep track of what opportunities you can get as each season comes in.
Think: When are stores opening for direct sales? When are Print-On-Demand sites offering higher discounts for indirect sales? When are people more available for workshops? Or maybe you can have a seasonal subscription box?
To be more productive as a multi-passionate creative, I encourage you to lean into what’s available for each of your passions as the seasons change. Tell me in the comments under the YouTube video: which season is your favorite, and why?

MEET ANNE
Hi…I’m Anne!
My creative inspiration comes from a lifetime of observation. I grew up in Paris on the Place St. Sulpice and walked to school through the Luxembourg gardens. And that was only the beginning… Learn more by watching the video on my About page.
