Wes Anderson's Asteroid City

For something a little different this week, I thought I’d share my impressions of Wes Anderson’s latest movie: 'Asteroid City'. I went to see it on Monday night with my husband and son and if you’ve seen any Wes Anderson movies before, you know you’re in for an experience.

If you’re not familiar with his movies, they have an unmistakeable quirkiness to them and Anderson's newest gem is a cinematic experience like no other. Here’s what I enjoyed the most.

1. The Colorful Protagonist: Pastel Hues

Perhaps the most unique aspect of 'Asteroid City' is its striking use of color - a feature so commanding that it almost feels like a character unto itself. Pastel colors flow freely throughout the film, drenching the entire cinematic landscape in hues of soft pinks, tranquil blues, and soothing greens. Anderson has always used color to tell his stories, but never before have the shades themselves taken such an active role. It’s against this colorful backdrop that the action unfolds.

2. Palette Cleansing Black & White Sequences

Anderson includes several black and white sequences in 'Asteroid City'. These monochrome sequences serve as visual palette cleansers, their stark simplicity creating a captivating contrast to the complex pastel universe. I found that these scenes gave me a chance to reset my visual senses. But also amplified the impact of the colorful scenes that followed.

3. A Quirky Narrative With a Stellar Cast

No discussion of a Wes Anderson film can be complete without mentioning his distinctive storytelling style and his star-studded cast. Anderson's eccentric narrative approach, often described as a blend of the mundane and the fantastic, is in full bloom in 'Asteroid City'. The film is filled with unexpected twists, surreal happenings, and quirky characters - all traits of Anderson's signature style - with his usual line up of movie stars.

I’m doing my best to withhold the details of the narrative in case you haven’t seen it yet. It’s well worth it to experience the genius of the cinematography. Don’t miss the use of light and shade too!

xo,

Anne
