Quick Tips – Merchandising Your Table

Let’s talk about best practices for merchandising your table at the craft fair. I’m super excited to talk about how to enhance your table setup and display your beautiful products in the most attractive way possible.

Merchandising your table with care is important because making your products stand out will attract buyers and keep them lingering longer to explore what you have to offer. This week’s tips on merchandising will help you highlight what you have to offer and attract people to your table throughout the event.

Let’s jump right into my top recommendations:

#1 – Bring a table cloth.

Don’t overcrowd your table with too much merchandise. It’s important for customers to easily understand what you have to offer and you don’t want to overwhelm them. The table cloth comes in handy because you can store extra inventory under the table. Customers can’t see it but you have easy access to it and can replenish your table throughout the event. This will help you keep your display neat and tidy and easy to shop.

Be creative and use one of your own designs for the tablecloth itself. You can order fabric from Spoonflower.com and this is a great way to showcase you pattern design talents! What’s most important is that your products pop against the background of your table covering and all of your extra inventory is hidden from view.

#2 – Display products at different heights.

Take care to display items at different levels on your table. You want some things to be higher while others are lower. Create additional interest by stacking some items vertically and others horizontally.

An easy way to do this is to save some boxes from shipments or deliveries you’ve received in the past. Save the boxes and display some of your products on top of them. If the boxes are brown, you don’t even need to cover them. They will disappear into the background of your overall display. If you want to cover them, you can use some of your own wrapping papers which provides you with another way to showcase your lovely designs.

#3 – Add dimensionality by stuffing key items.

If you have products like pouches and tote bags, fill them with tissue paper or recycled paper to make them stand out. This makes them easier to display – they can sit on the table – and it creates additional interest and brings another dimension to your setup.

Think about other display items that help add variety. A circular display for your greeting cards is another great example. Or a small picture stand if you have prints to showcase. Take an inventory of everything you’ll be selling and think carefully about additional props that you’ll want to bring with you to display them attractively.

Pro Tip! – Bring one or two items from your creative studio.

Don’t forget to personalize your table by bringing some flowers or a few items from your studio that have meaning for you. I like to bring an orchid plant because they’re beautiful and don’t take too much space. Bring a fresh vase of flowers if you prefer. Something that adds a personal touch to your overall display.

Also, if you have something special, a touchstone that represents you as an artist, bring that too! I bring a special blue ceramic jug filled with my favorite paint brushes. It reminds me of my early days as an artist, and I prop it up on its own box. Bring your own touchstone item.  It’s a great conversation starter when people stop by your table to explore what you have to offer.

Finally, don’t forget to bring business cards with you. You may also want to print out flyers with your contact information and a list of the items you’re selling with prices. Give your card and the flyer to everyone who stops by whether they purchase something or not. They may return later to make a purchase or contact you after the fair is over.
